SCHOLARSHIPS


EDWARD L. WALMSLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, 2023

The American Legion Posts in Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties award five scholarships per year (one per County) in the amount of $2000.  Edward L. Walmsley was a member of Kent-Queen Anne's Post 192 in Millington, Maryland.  He served as Commander of the Department of Maryland in 1960-1961 after holding a variety of leadership positions during his Legion caareer.  This scholarhip program was established in 1986 using funds donated by American Legion Posts in the North Eastern Shore District as a memorial to his many years of service.

This scholarship is open to high school seniors in Caroline, Cecil, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot County attending public, parochial, private or home schools.   The awards committee places high emphasis on Legion Member family Sponsor, Community Service, Americanism, GPA, and Legion Activities.

The application deadline is April 15th, 2023.  You must send your application to an American Legion Post in YOUR County.

DEPARTMENT OF MARYLAND SCHOLARSHIP, 2023

Awards are available annually to students throughout Maryland in amounts of $1,500 (1), $1,000 (1), and $500 (9).  Funds are allocated by the Department (state) Executive Committee (DEC).  Winners are selected by a committee within the DEC.

To be considered for a scholarship, the applicant must:
   - Be a child or a grandchild of a veteran (must show proof of veteran’s time in military discharge  or DD-214)
   - Be a Maryland resident
   - Not have attained their 20th birthday by January 1, 2023
   - Intend to be a full-time student when he/she enters college (at least 12 credits a semester)
   - Completed scholarship applications and back up information can not be faxed or emailed.
   - Have application, along with essay and transcript, delivered to:
       The American Legion, Department of Maryland, Inc.
       War Memorial Building
       101 N. Gay Street, Room E
       Baltimore, Maryland 21202

Applications are due in this office on or before April 15, 2023.   Scholarship Winners will be notified by mail in August 2023.


ANNUAL SAMSUNG AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP

Annual awards are available from National Headquarters and limited to attendees of the current year's sessions of Boys State and Girls State, who are decendents of American Legion members, or decendents of veterans who are elegible to join The American Legion.  There are ten $10,000 scholarships (2 from each region), ten $5,000 scholarships (2 from each region, and 80 $1,250 scholarships (to all remaining Departmental Finalists) awarded.  Boys State and Girls State is available to high school juniors in that school year.  See your High School Counselor for application procedures.  The Scholarship open date is February 1st every year, and all applications must be received before the start date of Boy's and Girl's State.  The American Legion Samsung Scholarship Information is here :
